About Equipotential Surfaces

Equipotential surfaces are imaginary surfaces where the electric potential is constant at every point. In this simulation:

Key Properties:

  • No work is required to move a charge along an equipotential surface
  • Electric field lines are always perpendicular to equipotential surfaces
  • The spacing between equipotential surfaces indicates the strength of the electric field

How to Use This Simulation:

  • Select different charge configurations from the controls
  • Adjust the sensitivity to change how potential values are mapped to colors
  • Toggle between equipotential lines and electric field vectors
  • Add your own charges by clicking on the simulation area

Notice how the equipotential lines are always perpendicular to the electric field vectors (when shown). For a single point charge, the equipotential surfaces are concentric spheres. For a dipole, they form more complex patterns.
